Keeping busy, somewhat
When the startup I was at folded their tent before Memorial Day last year, in the middle of a “tight job market”, I breezily thought I’d find another job right away. Unfortunately, even in a hiring year, the summer is when companies - especially in my native industry - are preoccupied with consumer and trade shows, and missing key people who are out on vacation, pushing hiring to the back burner.
Then I got COVID.
I have been very, very careful. And I was almost up-to-date on my vaccinations… Almost.
I took the opportunity to go to Edinburgh with a friend at the end of the summer, just when the bivalent shot was becoming available. I didn’t want to get the old shot, and then have to wait 6 months to get the new one. So, I thought, I’ll just take this one trip, and after I get back, the new shot should be easier to get hold of! Hmmm. 🫤
Fortunately, it was a mild and uncomplicated dose of the plague, but it still put me out of commission for a few weeks, and left me pretty tired for a while afterwards.
Then, just as I was starting to really worry, a past employee popped up, asking me to offer some advice to her current company on a subject where I am genuinely uniquely qualified. I happily put on my grown-up clothes, went downtown, and gave them an almost 2-hour download, including many, many things they hadn’t known to consider. And I repeatedly, told them, flat-out, “You should hire me!”. (They should hire me).
In the end, we set up a part-time consulting arrangement. I do hope this blossoms into something more, but in the meantime, I’m hunting through the couch cushions for spare change, and trying to rustle up some other work.
TL;DR: Need some business consultation? Hit me up! 😁
